Certify Your Transcripts and Diplomas in Foreign Countries

Congratulations You've Graduated!

Now that you are going abroad, you may need to certify your transcriptions or diploma for use in a country outside the United States. Most universities give guidance on its process but can still take time and complicated.

This Certification Process is often referred to as Apostille / Authentication

An Apostille or Authentication is often referred as certifing documents like a diploma, official transcript, and enrollment and graduation verification letters for use in some foreign countries. You will likely need these documents if you plan on returning to your home country, working abroad or plan on moving to a foreign country.

Why?

If you get a job or move to another country, most jobs will require a copy of your transcripts. Some companies won't accept transcripts that haven't been certified. The easiest and most effective way to get these documents certified is by using the process called an apostille. This can be time-consuming and very complicated.

Where?

Get your transcripts notarized at the registrar's office. Usually, there's information on the process for requesting a notarized document. NYU and Columbia have their own sites.

How?

You can email your college or university. They usually don't assist in the process of getting the documents certified but they will give you a notarized copy of your documents.

When?

You can get a document when you need it but often you will wait until a company, documents that are certified usually only have a shelf life of 5 years. Since the process can be costly and time-consuming you will want to plan appropriately.
